What is LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site. It’s a place to share your skills and credentials, industry insights, past and current work accomplishments, and connection opportunities.

LinkedIn is a place where relationships matter. It is not a magic website that will create success, but rather a tool to reach out to whomever you need while growing your professional presence.

It is based on the principle that every person is connected to one another by no more than six degrees of separation from everybody else. In other words, it is simple for individuals to connect with others by simply utilizing their network of contacts. The network keeps record of who knows whom and provides a way to connect people based on personal expertise, work and life experience, interests and needs.

The key to mastering LinkedIn is establishing your online presence, growing your network, and taking advantage of the opportunities that arise.

In this course, we will explain the importance of LinkedIn and walk you through how to create a killer presence on this professional network–paving the way for endless possibilities.

WHY DOES LINKEDIN MATTER?

LinkedIn provides exactly what its name implies- a way to become linked in to the most influential people, groups and areas of study.

As the world’s largest and most influential professional social network, LinkedIn allows you to reach out to business people and connect with all types of professionals worldwide. The network allows you to establish thought leadership roles, build vital relationships, generate valuable leads, gain insights, conduct market research, maintain and improve your online reputation, and build online communities.

The beauty of LinkedIn is that you do not have to be limited to connecting with people that you know and who know you well. You can expand your network by connecting with current or past classmates, individuals in your industry, prospects, co-workers and those who reach out to you. The tools within LinkedIn help you expand your network so you can have connections from near and far alike.

SEO

Being visible on search engines is one of the most important aspects of a brand in our search-happy society. You ideally want your brand’s name, address, and phone number to be listed in the top business directories and LinkedIn offers a great way to display your brand.

MANAGING YOUR ONLINE REPUTATION

It’s important that your customers see the information that you want them to see about your company. It’s much better to have positive content on LinkedIn ranked high in search and show up first in results rather than neutral or negative content elsewhere, which could turn potential customers away.

NETWORKING

LinkedIn contacts serve an entirely different purpose than Facebook friends or Twitter followers. LinkedIn contacts are professionals who you should expect to develop a professional relationship with. Many people use LinkedIn to find important information from industry experts and to make meaningful connections. They do these things so they can one day do business with these experts. This is the core of professional networking. Therefore, the better you build your network and position yourself as an industry leader, the more leads your business will see from your efforts.

These connections prove handy in both present and future needs through references, expert recommendations, endorsements and job leads, which are all easily accessible through LinkedIn. By continually expanding your network and being involved in groups, you will be able to obtain solid recommendations when the need arises.

And by the nature of the professional network, you can be sure that you not only know who gave you the advice, but also have access to their resume, background, and recommendations by their connections. This gives you a simple way to perform a quick accuracy check on all your connections

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Many individuals use LinkedIn for professional development. Professionals frequently post about new tools that can help improve industry knowledge, upcoming conferences where networking and new knowledge are abundant, and new tricks of the trade. All of these are valuable resources that can be easily utilized.

While all of these aspects are very valuable on LinkedIn, you first need to have a solid, reliable presence that stands out above the rest in order to create these valuable connections. To do so, you need to make sure you have optimized your profile. We will talk about this next.

IS LINKEDIN GOOD FOR BUSINESSES?

Of course it is.

Back in November, LinkedIn made it possible for brands to have a platform for promotion by creating company pages. These pages allow your business to create content explaining your brand, products, and services. By having a LinkedIn company page, your employees can link their employment experiences to your page.  Also, users of LinkedIn can follow company profiles much like they would on Twitter and Facebook.

You can even embed videos and create ad campaigns for your products or services by using LinkedIn’s easy user interface.

Getting ready to meet with a potential client? Search for their LinkedIn profile. From there you will be able to see some of their interests, their recent employment history, and who they are connected with. Those connections maybe someone you know too.
